Hearing Aid Styles

There are three main hearing aid types.
BTE (Behind the Ear)

BTE (Behind the Ear)

Hearing aids that sit behind the ear are a great option for wearers smaller-than-average ear canals or those that suffer from more severe hearing loss. With BTEs, the electronic parts are stored behind your ear, while a custom ear mold and tube direct sound in to your ear. BTES allow you to easily control the volume and other settings for your hearing aids.

ITE hearing aids

ITE (In the Ear)

ITE hearing aids fit within the outer portion of the ear and may be suitable for those with mild to severe hearing loss. They are easy to adjust, custom made for you, and available in a variety of colors that blend in with your skin.

RITE (Receiver in the Ear)

RITE (Receiver in the Ear)

For those that want a smaller housing than a BTE, RITE hearing aids may be a good solution. Depending on the shape of your ear and your degree of hearing loss, RITE hearing aids may be suitable for you. They transmit sound to a receiver that sits just outside your ear on the hollow next to your ear canal.

ITE (In the Ear)

Within ITE, there are five sizes, listed from smallest to largest:
IIC (Invisible in the Canal)

IIC (Invisible in the Canal)

These hearing aids are so small, no one will notice you’re wearing them. Invisible in the canal hearing aids are great for most people with mild to moderately severe hearing loss and are custom made to fit your ear.

CIC (Completely in the Canal)

CIC (Completely in the Canal)

With CIC hearing aids, the tiny removal handle of the hearing aid is the only part that shows outside of the ear canal, making it virtually undetectable. It’s great for those with mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

ITC (In the Canal)

ITC (In the Canal)

Hearing aids that fit in the ear canal are custom-made for you and useful for those with mild to mildly severe hearing loss. A small portion of the hearing aid is visible in your outer ear, but a range of available colors helps it to blend in with your natural ear.

Half Shell

Half Shell

Half shell hearing aids fill only the lower portion of the outer ear. They may be easier for some people to handle due to their larger size. Additionally, the larger size allows you to add beneficial features like directional microphones, volume controls and push buttons to activate special settings for different listening environments.

Full Shell

Full Shell

This type of ITE hearing aid fills most of the outer ear. Their larger size allows the maximum number of added features and controls, which require space on the outer portion of the hearing aid. Full shell hearing aids are widely recommended for mild to severe hearing loss because of their flexibility.

Additional Features

to Consider

When shopping for a hearing aid, consider these optional features that may improve your ability to hear in certain situations.

The best hearing aid for you depends on several factors, including the severity and type of your hearing loss, your lifestyle, and manual dexterity. A hearing aid that’s right for one person might not be right for you, even if you have nearly identical degrees of hearing loss.
